The Revolution is NOW!

I have always loved the band Rage Against the Machine. Their music and lyrics capture the disgust I feel toward those who exploit the vast majority of humanity.

It's not only the ultra rich landowners and multi-national corporations, it's also those who sell out to the powerful at the expense of the rest of us. The politicians who claim to represent the people while lining their pockets and providing cover for the thieves on Wall Street, is just one example.

And now the young people are rising up! Old people are rising up too!
They see who's pulling the strings, they have had enough...AND I HAVE TOO.

The revolution is here, it's now! Or in the lyrics of Rage:

It has to start somewhere

It has to start sometime

What better place than here,

what better time than now?

All hell can't stop us now!

All hell can't stop us now!

All hell can't stop us now!

All hell can't stop us now!

Please join the revolution...attend a rally, sign up with a group on facebook, make your voice heard. This may be our last chance to really take our country back!!

Is there a difference between Right and Left - HELL YES!!

Today I had a conversation with my son who shared an article with me about the University of Washington recently shifting toward a "business model" in order to stay afloat in the current business climate.

Supposedly, the UW is turning away state applicants in favor of out of state applicants with lower grade point averages.

Why? because out-of-staters pay higher tuition. It's a "good business practice."

The fact is, the pressure to privatize government institutions is one of the Right Wing's agenda items in order line the pockets of their corporate masters and strip away every social safety net there is...be it education, health, housing, pensions, etc. etc.

So, when I hear people tell me that there is no difference between Right and Left politics, my blood pressure goes through the roof.

It goes like this... No one wants to pay taxes...but then they scream like bloody wounded pigs when institutions are forced to cut costs or find ways to obtain funding.

I think what UW is doing stinks.....but then, with jack asses like Tim Eyman constantly cutting out the means of funding government by pushing initiatives that gain popular support by an uninformed public...what do we expect?

“I don’t want to pay taxes, I hate taxes...hey, what happened to my roads? why is my water now unsafe, why am I getting contaminated meat, etc. etc.”

Yes, it’s also true that governments, like businesses can be mismanaged. But you don’t solve a debt problem by just cutting off services.

It would be like you telling your wife, “we just saved 1,000 a month on our income by not paying our mortgage.” That would work great for about three months. Then when they came to evict you, you’d be screaming, “Hey, why are you taking my home?”

Sounds ludicrous right? but that is EXACTLY what our nation is going through. The right wing whack jobs have conned everyone into this “hate government, hate taxes’ rhetoric.

Because most people are uninformed (make that LAZY) and greedy, they buy into it. Now the bill is due all over the place. Schools are running out of funds, state and local governments...and the national treasury is bankrupt.

We used to have a strong system of tarriffs to provide income and protection for this country. Tarrifs prevented cheap goods from flooding our markets at the expense of American jobs. Tarrifs provided a huge income for our government.

What happened? Republicans virtually destroyed them (with help from some Dems).

We used to have protection from Wall Street and Banks colluding to take unnecessary risk at taxpayer expense.

What happened? Republicans destroyed them (with help from some Dems) We used to have a solvent Social security account until Ronald Regan decided to use it as a PIGGY bank to fund other crap...i.e. he lowered taxes for the wealthy and made up the difference from the money me and millions of other Americans put into our “retirement account” and now they want to privatize that!

This is why I get sick to my stomach when uninformed people tell me there is no difference between Right and Left. There is a huge difference although both play a role in our national demise.

Republicans are out to utterly destroy the middle class in favor of the almighty Corporations (follow the money!)

However, many of those who call themselves Republicans are really uniformed individuals who buy into the crap from the Right...they are manipulated often by using social issues like a Trojan Horse.

These uninformed individuals who call themselves Republicans or Conservatives are being used by the Right to push their economic agenda that harms the very people who support them. That's what those of us on the left mean by "voting against your own self-interest" The Right has mastered the art of manipulating ignorant people, much of them "good God-fearing Christians" to get their dirty work done.

On the Left, Democrats are lead for the most part by spineless leaders...afraid to fight. In some ways it’s understandable because the right pretty much controls the media. So if you do stand up, they use the noise machine to make you sound like a loony and the general public writes you off.

Remember the "Dean Scream"?

Howard Dean made a simple goof at a rally by letting out a scream. I agree he sounded like a nut case when you heard it...but when you learned the whole story...it was harmless.

However, the Right was afraid of Dean for his ideas to fix health care and other things...so they found a way to silence him by making him look like a whack job to the public.

Those of us on the Left who are informed and aware of what's going on, have an uphill battle as the Right controls most of the media, and the leaders on the Left are more worried about their personal survival than standing up against the continued assault on working Americans.

The few leaders on the Left who have stood up have suffered the full scale assault as millions of dollars are poured from home and aboard to smear them out of office. There's a long list of good, solid, Progressive leaders who have stood up for working people who have been drummed out by the Right Wing noise machine.

So, please, whatever your politics, don't tell me there's no difference between Right and Left. There is a huge differnce.

The Left lacks leaders with courage, and the Right has leaders who are bent on the destruction of working class Americans. That's a huge contrast.

The recent events in Wisconsin give me hope that we, the people, may actually turn back the anti-working class tide lead by the Right.

Let's hope so. Because if the tide isn't turned, ultimately this nation will end in anarchy! Once you strip away all hope from the majority, by eliminating their safety net, lining the pockets of the rich, and leaving everyone else to despair.

Trust me, there will be an uprising, and it will be ugly.

Is there a difference between Right and Left?

HELL YES!

Wisconsin and the last cookie...

Ever since that moron of a governor in Wisconsin announced his plan to do away with workers collective bargaining rights, workers across the nation have risen up to fight back.

It's difficult to get the general public to understand why it is so important to have unions and collective bargaining. If only there were some way to illustrate the concept...

By now the story has made the rounds a few hundred thousand times.
I've heard several variations. One of them goes like this:

A CEO, a non-union worker, and a union worker sat down at a table.
The CEO took 11 of 12 cookies.
Then he said to the non-union worker,
"be careful, that union guy wants to take the last cookie!"

Like I said, there's probably 10 or more variations, but the concept is there.

It's a perfect way to illustrate what's going on these days, hell, what's been going on since Ronald Reagan came to power.

It's all about framing, it's all about securing wealth for the few, and creating a diversion so that everyone else fights over what's left over.

I would like to think those days are coming to an end, but I'm not that optimistic.
Too many Americans are still clueless as to the rip off going on right before their eyes.

I'm so tired of hearing people say, "oh both political parties are the same" "they all lie" blah blah blah.

The fact remains, that as fault-ridden as the Democratic Party is, it is THE ONLY PARTY that ever did squat for working people.

Every law on the books today protecting workers was fought for and won by DEMOCRATS.
Fair Labor Standards - i.e. the 40 hour work week...DEMOCRATS
Child Labor Laws - DEMOCRATS
Civil Rights - DEMOCRATS
Family Medical Leave Act - DEMOCRATS
Social Security, Medicare, Health Care - DEMOCRATS

The list goes on and on...
Oh, you'll hear some RepubliCONs tell you how they voted for some of these laws.
That's true, SOME did.

But on every piece of legislation, from the Food and Drug Safety Act to the new Healthcare Reform under President Obama, the right wing, business-worshipping RepubliCONs have fought every one of those initiatives.

I'm also fed up with the worship of St. Ronald Reagan. While he was a personable man, and a very good speechmaker, he was a disaster as a President! Under his "leadership" we saw tax breaks for the rich, while millions of Americans lost their jobs and many ended up homeless...sound familiar? Yep, the same policies of Reagan were carried on by Bush, Clinton, and Bush II.

And now our nation is nearly broke.

AND YET, the RepubliCONs want to blame this mess on Democrats and working Americans.
The mess in Wisconsin is a prime example of over reach by RepubliCONs who want to make workers, specifically union workers the problem.

Remember, there's only one cookie left!

I can't believe that we sit by while the federal government gives BILLIONS (with a "B") in tax breaks to the Oil Companies, while they gouge us with prices at nearly $4 a gallon.

One important lesson should be learned from Wisconsin.
Until people get on their feet and begin to fight back, NOTHING will happen.

I sincerely believe that all working Americans should band together and call a 3-day general strike to send a message to the RepubliCONs and the multi-national corporations. If we stand together as our brothers and sisters did in Madison, Wisconsin, we could bring these anti-worker forces to their knees.

It's time that we demand much more than a cookie!

Fired up, Ready to GO!

Well folks, I've been silent for too long!
I realized the other day that I was allowing my Facebook page to be overtaken by my social/political rants. While I make no apologies for my views...I figured it might be a good idea to return to blogging...and let my Facebook page return to being a "happy place" to brag about grandbabies and such.

I will place links on my Facebook to refer back to this blog...

As always, I welcome dissenting views...but be prepared for rebuttal, and counter rebuttles from me.

This is one Liberal that is neither bashful or apologetic for his views in support of ALL human beings...not just the priveleged few!

The Tea Party – The Frankenstein of the Right Wing!

For the past 30+ years the conservatives have meticulously developed an infrastructure to take control of the government. Knowing they could not rely on sheer numbers (conservatives have knack for being non-populist), they focused on getting folks in key positions, developing solid (and dirty) communication tactics, thanks to “geniuses” like Frank Luntz, and getting a strangle hold on the media through consolidation by a few conservative corporate entities.

But then, uh oh, the McCain campaign came up with this brilliant idea to bring on Ms. Palin. All that planning down the drain. Enter Palin and scores of nutcases (even by right-wing standards) with no grooming, no message prep, no allegiance to the planners who spent years preparing for the takeover.

For whatever reason, her charisma, her beauty, her folksiness, her mavericky way, or perhaps just the fact that she’s seen as an outsider...millions of Americans think Palin, and the many Palin wannabes that have followed should be given a chance to lead.

It turned out to be the perfect answer to capture those voters who have no allegiance to either party and who aren’t interested in all the ‘details’ of politics.
As most strategists will attest, it only takes a relatively small percentage of voters to change the outcome of an election. And of those voters, most tend to spend little time digging into the issues. Again, this turned out to be a perfect formula for the Palin-ites, and the Michelle Bachman-ites, and others to exploit. Attractive women yelling simplistic messages like, “reduce taxes” “reduce government” and the rest becomes (political) history.

The irony is amazing! Not only are the Democrats reeling from these crazies...but the Republicans are as well. They have a Frankenstein on their hands; a monster that will not answer to them, one that they can’t predict or control.

In two weeks, if even a portion of these nut cases make it to the Senate, both parties will have to deal with a minimum of 6 years of whacked out sound bites and weird proposed legislation.

I think it’s also ironic that conservatives have always been fearful of the masses getting too much power...and instead manipulated the public to follow their message. But the introduction of the Palin-factor was like aiming a 22 caliber at their left foot! Now they have a “populist” uprising of ultra-extreme right wingers with the support of many Americans who really aren’t paying much attention. Most Americans are not interested in the details of what’s going on, they’re just sick of both parties...both of whom they blame for the mess this country is in. SO, the Tea Party nutbags win by default!

Another irony: Us Dems and Progressives have always found our power in the masses. It’s always been agitate, educate, and organize. The greatest social achievements of the 19th and 20th century were carried out by progressives as we mobilized the masses to our cause. And now, in 2010 we are witnessing a twisted populism that has not stirred up the masses to become informed and involved...but rather to simply choose the lesser of three evils...No to Dems, No to Republicans, yes to Tea Party whackos!

The motto for these latter day loony-populists is not agitate, educate, organize...but rather agitate, agitate, agitate...after all, they only need to get a relative small percentage of the apathetic electorate to mark the ballot for these newcomers...after all they figure anybody will do better than those currently in power, right? right? (or left).

When this current election cycle is complete, and the dust settles, we may be waking up to the worst hangover imaginable. We could see a group of newly elected representatives and senators that are anti-government, ignorant, and angry taking the reign of leadership of this nation. Keith Olbermann’s new book “Pitchforks and Torches” reminds me of the scene in Frankenstein where the villagers come together to get rid of the monster. Unfortunately, in the case of the Tea Party monster, the villagers won’t be able to do anything about it for a couple of years in the case of congressmen...and six years in the case of senators who get elected in November.

Civil Discourse

I miss the days, when a liberal and a conservative could sit down and have a discussion of ideas, many of which they were in total disagreement. Discussions that didn't devolve to name-calling, or impugn one's character, but rather an exchange of thoughts, principles, and ideas.

I long for debates in which individuals consider the other's views to the point that they might even change their mind if the logic of their argument was inescapable.

I think they used to call it "civil discourse"

I read in a history book that the Father of Modern Conservatism, Barry Goldwater was crushed by the Kennedy's assassination.

Apparently he and JFK had discussions in the early months of 1963 about doing a nation wide series of debates in the tradition of the famous Lincoln / Douglas debates.

These two men, each devout in their political idealogy, one liberal, one conservative, relished the exchange of their ideas.
I have no doubt that JFK had some influence in reshaping Goldwater's beliefs and visa versa.

Today's "scorched earth" landscape in which people of the same party and almost identical views, claw, and sneer, and take cheap shots in an effort to climb on top is repulsive to me.

This kind of behaviour makes it almost an impossibility of having any meaning full dialogue with those who have vastly differing views.

I love debate...and I enjoy "disagreeing" with thoughtful, intelligent creatures. But I have no tolerance whatsoever for idealogues who simply want to find ways to disparage my views and play a game of one upmanship for onlookers.

Playin' those mind games...forever Part I

A John Lennon song titled, Mind Games really sums up the way things are in American politics today.

How did we get to the point where our politics is nothing but division and accusation?

The ideological war that rages on in this country goes back more than 40 years during the Vietnam War. In the late 1960's many Americans had come to view the Vietnam War as a senseless waste of human life.

The war had begun under a Democratic President, Lyndon Johnson and was the key reason he declined to run for a second term. He realized that the American public had grown weary of the war. Although much of the public had turned against the war, Republican Richard Nixon won the election.

Fragmented after the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy and terrible infighting, the Democratic party's nominee Hubert Humphrey was unable to defeat Nixon. Even with the strong 3rd Party candidacy of former segregationist Alabama Governor George Wallace, Nixon was able to pull ahead.

What was Nixon's strategy? Simple. He posed to the American public that those opposed to the war were a vocal minority. He put out the call to what he labeled as the "silent majority." He characterized these people as the moral, upright, citizens, who accepted the call to war, and dutifully supported their government. So, the inverse was a simple conclusion, everyone else was immoral, unpatriotic, and opposed to what was right.

When the world is divided into such simplistic terms, it creates great opportunities for those in power, and overwhelming disadvantage for those out of power. From that moment in 1968, the Republican party found a tool that would carry them for the next 40 years - the politics of division and accusation.

Even after President Nixon had left the Oval Office in shame, the Party continued to develop it's themes of division and accusation in order to regain power. From the moment President Jimmy Carter, a self-proclaimed "Born Again Christian" took office the Republicans assailed him as morally weak.

Even though Carter had a distinguished career in the US Navy, the Right portrayed him as one who lacked the guts to go to war if necessary. Near the end of his term the economy was in a shambles, due in large part to the oil crisis which began long before his term. The hostage crisis in Iran gave additional fuel for the Republicans to charge that Carter and the Democrats could not be trusted to lead. Through division and accusation, the White House was recaptured in 1980.

The "Reagan Years" were not nearly as rosy as today's conservatives try to proclaim. Our nation suffered some of it's worst economic distress. The term "homeless" became common for the first time since the Great Depression. And Wall Street began on a course of greed and corruption that would go virtually unnoticed for the next 28 years. The Soviet Union which had spent itself essentially into bankruptcy fighting a war in Afghanistan, could not longer afford to stay in the super power arms race with the US.

Mind games…Part II

Soviet Communist Party Leader Mikhail Gorbachev was a shrewd politician. Rather than admit defeat, he provided Ronald Reagan with a golden opportunity. As Gorbachev began to allow Russians more political freedom, the ultimate collapse of the Soviet Union was credited undeservedly to President Reagan. The result was a new round of chest thumping for those on the Right. For more than 20 years, Reagan has been touted as the man who took down the Soviet Empire. This would serve as rocket fuel for the Republicans for years to come.

The Republican Party added a new dimension to their arsenal of political division and accusation tools – religion. They worked carefully with those on the religious right, fundamentalist Christian leaders to make Republican values and Christian values synonymous. The “silent majority” morphed into the “moral majority.” It was a clever move, and both used the other. Religious leaders like Jerry Fallwell, Pat Robertson, and later James Dobson would gleefully look the other way as the party did many un-Christian things in exchange for the unprecedented access they would gain to the White House and party leaders.

George H. W. Bush ascended to the Presidency for two reasons: Ronald Reagan and Willie Horton. While Bush could probably have ascended to the presidency solely on the coat tails of Reagan, the party took nothing for granted. They set out to discredit his opponent Massachusetts Governor Mike Dukakis as a candidate who was soft on crime, soft on defense, and soft on moral virtues. One of the most controversial political ads of all time was aired coast-to-coast, telling the story of Willie Horton who had been paroled with the Governor’s approval. Horton reoffended by raping and killing a woman. The ad was powerful and many argue that the ad itself cost Dukakis the election. Again, through division and accusation, the Right prevailed in it’s effort to maintain political power.

Unable to compete with the charisma of Bill Clinton, the election of 1992 went to the Democrats for the first time in 12 years. Clinton had wisely chosen to focus on the failing economy. It worked. And despite the Republicans efforts to highlight on Clinton’s alleged moral infidelity and corruption, they were unable to keep the White House.

The Republicans immediately set about to defeat Clinton from the day he took office. Two years after his election, the Republicans took control of both houses of congress using the same basic strategy they had employed with Richard Nixon – that America was based on old fashioned morals, and it was time for the “silent majority” to rise up again.

In Clinton’s second term, his own personal failure played perfectly into the hypothesis that had been incubated for nearly 30 years – Democrats are immoral. Though few would put it so simply, that was the inference drawn by millions of Americans, particularly those among the Religious Right.

Mind Games Part III

The election of 2000 provided a clear picture of the final result of 32 years of what political division and accusation can produce. Never mind that the vote was so close. The real story was in the hyper attitude among those on the right and the left. As the weeks unfolded in the bitter election count, it became clear that this country had never been more divided.

Then came 911, and the county, the world, literally changed. Nationalism, understandably was the first reaction of a nation reacting to the horror and carnage that had been inflicted. But it also proved to be another excellent opportunity to silence anyone who dared to disagree with whatever those in power decided to do. As President George W. Bush would say, “you’re either with us or you’re with the terrorists.” Again, the subtle introduction of division and accusation was carefully embedded into the national conscience.

Democrats would reluctantly “go along to get along” rather than face accusations of cowardice in the face of an unseen enemy. And thus, Bush’s decision to launch into war with Iraq was a foregone conclusion. It provided him with an excellent visual, a ‘crusade’ against evil, one that Americans could root for. Some have suggested that it was no mistake that the term “crusade” had been invoked. The Crusades nearly 1,000 years earlier saw the Christians take arms against a number of “enemies of the church,” among them Muslims. And though Bush proclaimed that he had nothing against Islam, the visual created by his choice of words was a direct contradiction.

In 2004, John Kerry, a decorated Vietnam Veteran, was harshly assailed with the politics of division and accusation. Incredibly, his war record was cast aside in favor of a man who never served his nation offshore, and who’s limited service record was questionable. The Republican Party was reaping the benefits of years of planning, organizing, and indoctrination. They had created the perfect machine for annihilating opponents through the use of conservative talk radio, and the cable outlet, FOX Network. Their use of the media, elected, and religious leaders maintain a constant barrage of division and accusation against their opponents seemed unbeatable.

In each congressional election since 1994, the Republicans employed the “wedge issue” as an excellent means of electing their candidates and carrying out agendas that were harmful to the very people who supported them. By advocating initiatives against gays, promoting efforts to ‘protect’ religious beliefs, and support gun rights, millions of voters blindly supported the party ticket based on one or two wedge issues near and dear to them.
